Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea

Sansa are a serial ensemble of Buddhist mountain monasteries located across the Korean peninsula, representing living examples of Korean Buddhist monastic architecture and practice. They preserve ritual buildings, meditation halls and monastic precincts in mountain settings.

Each monastery is a functional religious complex with wooden halls, cloisters, ritual spaces and painted decoration that reflect Korean Buddhist architectural forms and monastic layouts. The monasteries maintain traditional liturgies, monastic education and community rituals that attract pilgrims and cultural visitors.

These monastic sites developed over many centuries as centres of Korean Buddhism; major buildings and precinct plans reflect successive phases of construction and religious patronage from the medieval period onwards. The complexes have been continually adapted for religious use while retaining core architectural and ritual features.

The monasteries are sited in mountainous, forested landscapes across the Korean peninsula, often within national parks or preserved mountain areas and accessible via local roads and footpaths.
