Sans-Souci Palace is the ruined palace near Milot in northern Haiti that served as the royal residence of Henri Christophe, King of northern Haiti, in the early 19th century. The palace was an administrative centre and a symbol of the kingdom established after Haitian independence.
Construction took place after 1804 under Christophe’s direction and the palace functioned as his principal residence and court until political upheaval and his death in 1820. The structure suffered significant damage from an earthquake in 1842 and the surviving ruins remain an important archaeological and touristic site.
The palace occupies gardens and terraces close to the Ramiers plain and is part of the ensemble of monuments that symbolize Haiti’s early independent state-building. It is commonly visited along with nearby Citadelle Laferrière and the Ramiers complex.
