Sankoré Madrasah

Sankoré Madrasah is an historic mosque and center of Islamic learning in Timbuktu, Mali, famed for its role in West African scholarship. The madrasa became a major intellectual and manuscript-producing center during the medieval period.

The complex functioned both as a mosque and as a classroom complex where scholars lectured and copied manuscripts on law, theology, astronomy and other subjects. Hundreds of private and institutional libraries in Timbuktu accumulated manuscript collections that represent the city’s scholastic output.

Sankoré developed as part of Timbuktu’s growth as a trans-Saharan trade and scholarly hub from roughly the 14th century onward, reaching prominence under the Mali and Songhai empires. The mosque and its manuscript collections have been the focus of preservation and cataloguing efforts in recent decades.

Timbuktu is located near the southern edge of the Sahara in Mali’s Tombouctou Region, on the southern rim of the desert and north of the Niger River inland delta.
