Sanjūsangen-dō, formally Rengeō-in, is a major Buddhist temple in Kyoto best known for its unusually long wooden hall and its ensemble of 1,001 statues of Kannon. The name Sanjūsangen-dō refers to the hall’s architectural bay count and the building dates from a 13th century reconstruction.

The principal highlight is the main hall, approximately 120 metres long, which contains a central seated Kannon flanked by 1,000 standing Kannon statues arranged in rows, most carved and gilded in the late Heian and Kamakura periods. The scale and density of these sculptures make the interior unique in Japan.

The original temple was founded in the 12th century and the present hall largely reflects a rebuilding in the 13th century after fire. The site has functioned as an active temple since its reconstruction and preserves art and sculpture from the medieval period.

The temple sits in eastern Kyoto, north of the city centre, and is readily reachable from Kyoto’s main rail and bus hubs; it is a well-established cultural and pilgrimage destination within the city.

  • Tōshiya archery: Annual archery event known as Tōshiya historically used the hall's long veranda for competition and still attracts attention during special events.

What to See #

  • Main hall (Sanjūsangen-dō): The long wooden main hall dates to a 13th century reconstruction and measures about 120 metres in length, making it one of Japan's longest wooden structures. It houses the temple's principal statues and functions as the focal point for rituals and visitor access.
  • 1,001 Kannon statues: A row and flanking arrangements of a total of 1,001 statues of Kannon - a central, larger seated image surrounded by 1,000 life-size standing figures - most date from the late 12th to 13th centuries and are gilded wooden sculptures placed along the hall's interior.
