Sani Pass

Sani Pass is a steep mountain pass that links KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa with the Mokhotlong District of Lesotho, crossing the Drakensberg range. It is one of the highest drivable passes in southern Africa, rising to around 2,800 metres above sea level.

The pass is a narrow, unpaved road with steep hairpin bends and loose surfaces; it is commonly traversed by 4x4 vehicles and organised tour operators. The summit area on the Lesotho side hosts a border post and a small hospitality outlet frequently used by travellers.

Historically the route served as a mountain link for local communities and trade and later developed into a motorable road that connects remote mountain settlements with South African towns. Its dramatic ascent and high altitude make it a distinctive transport and tourist route.

The pass sits on the border between South Africa and Lesotho in the Drakensberg mountains, with the South African approach from the Underberg/Drakensberg foothills and the Lesotho side descending into Mokhotlong District.

• Vehicle requirement: A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the unpaved and steep sections of the road, particularly in wet or snowy weather.
• Border and weather: Border crossing hours and passport requirements should be checked in advance as the post at the summit does not operate 24 hours and weather can close the route.
