Main image

Sani Pass is a steep mountain pass that links KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa with the Mokhotlong District of Lesotho, crossing the Drakensberg range. It is one of the highest drivable passes in southern Africa, rising to around 2,800 metres above sea level.

The pass is a narrow, unpaved road with steep hairpin bends and loose surfaces; it is commonly traversed by 4x4 vehicles and organised tour operators. The summit area on the Lesotho side hosts a border post and a small hospitality outlet frequently used by travellers.

Historically the route served as a mountain link for local communities and trade and later developed into a motorable road that connects remote mountain settlements with South African towns. Its dramatic ascent and high altitude make it a distinctive transport and tourist route.

The pass sits on the border between South Africa and Lesotho in the Drakensberg mountains, with the South African approach from the Underberg/Drakensberg foothills and the Lesotho side descending into Mokhotlong District.

  • Vehicle requirement: A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the unpaved and steep sections of the road, particularly in wet or snowy weather.
  • Border and weather: Border crossing hours and passport requirements should be checked in advance as the post at the summit does not operate 24 hours and weather can close the route.

What to See #

  • Summit border post and pub: The summit border post and adjacent hospitality building on the Lesotho side that serves travellers completing the ascent and descent of the pass.

How to Get to Sani Pass #

Sani Pass is the high mountain road linking the South African side (near Underberg/Himeville in KwaZulu‑Natal) with Lesotho’s highlands in Mokhotlong District. It is a steep, unpaved and frequently rough route that requires a capable 4x4 vehicle; many visitors use guided 4x4 shuttles that depart from Underberg/Himeville. There is a border/immigration post at the summit area (Sani Top), so allow extra time for the crossing and check operating hours before you travel.

Tips for Visiting Sani Pass #

  • Cross Sani Pass early in the day to avoid afternoon weather changes and to clear the border post queues before coach groups and tour convoys arrive.
  • Use a high-clearance 4x4: the gravel road is steep and rough and many rental companies prohibit taking standard hire cars into Lesotho, so confirm vehicle restrictions with your rental firm beforehand.
  • Carry passport and vehicle documentation - the pass is an international border crossing with immigration checks on both sides, and seasonal closures or snow can affect access in winter.

Best Time to Visit Sani Pass #

Plan for the drier months (roughly April-October) for more reliable road conditions and clearer views; check local road and weather reports because the pass can be hazardous in heavy rain or snow.

Dry season (easier road conditions)
April-October · ~0-15°C (mountain conditions)
Drier, cooler months generally offer firmer road surfaces and clearer views; many operators prefer to run 4x4 trips then.
Wet/summer season
November-March · ~5-20°C
Summer brings more rain and muddy, slippery sections on the pass; heavy rains can make the route difficult or impassable.
Winter (snow possible)
June-August · often at or below 0-10°C at high elevations
At high elevations the pass can see snow and very cold conditions; travel may be challenging and local operators may restrict access.
