Sangihe Islands
Islands Indonesian island group with active volcanoes and reefs
A volcanic archipelago north of Sulawesi, the Sangihe Islands attract divers, whale-watchers and anglers with steep reefs, strong currents and pelagic fish; visitors also explore remote villages, traditional North Sulawesi culture, and ferry or air links via Tahuna.
The Sangihe Islands are an Indonesian archipelago in the far north of Sulawesi, administratively part of North Sulawesi province. The chain lies on a tectonically active boundary and comprises a series of narrow, often steep volcanic islands.
The islands offer rugged coastlines, tropical forested hills and fishing villages rather than large tourist infrastructure, with marine and diving opportunities in surrounding waters. Several islands have volcanic peaks and steep terrain that support small-scale agriculture and distinctive local cultures.
The islands have been inhabited by Austronesian-speaking peoples for many centuries and were incorporated into regional trade networks. During the colonial period they came under Dutch control and later became part of the modern Indonesian state.
The Sangihe chain lies in the Celebes Sea between northern Sulawesi and the southern Philippines, north of mainland Sulawesi and east of the Minahasa peninsula.
- Volcanic islands: The archipelago is volcanic in origin and includes active volcanic peaks, which shape the islands' steep terrain and fertile soils.
How to Get to Sangihe Islands #
The Sangihe Islands are reached from North Sulawesi’s main transport hub, Manado. Travel options include scheduled or overnight ferries from Manado to the islands and occasional regional/charter flights to island airstrips; once on an island, local boats, taxis and motorbikes provide inter-island and local transport.
Tips for Visiting Sangihe Islands #
- Fly into Melonguane (MNA) from Manado or arrange inter-island ferries as your entry point; schedules are limited so book flights and any onward boat transfers well in advance.
- Visit during the dry season (roughly May-September) when sea conditions are calmer for boat transfers and diving/snorkelling excursions.
- Bring sufficient Indonesian rupiah and confirm bookings with local operators ahead of time-services, ATMs and accommodation options are sparse across the islands.
Best Time to Visit Sangihe Islands #
The dry season (May-October) is usually best for visiting-less rain, calmer seas and better conditions for marine activities.
