Sandy Glacier Headwall

Sandy Glacier Headwall is the steep, cliff-like rock face above the Sandy Glacier on Mount Hood in Oregon. It marks the upper boundary of the glacier’s accumulation zone.

The headwall is a prominent glacial feature characterized by steep rock and ice, attracting technical climbers and observers studying alpine glaciation. It defines the glacier’s catchment and contributes debris to lower glacier ice and moraines.

The headwall and associated glacier were sculpted by repeated cycles of alpine glaciation and ongoing freeze-thaw processes; recent decades have seen retreat and thinning of mountain glaciers in the region.

Located on Mount Hood within Mount Hood National Forest in northern Oregon, the headwall sits within the Mount Hood Wilderness area and is accessible only by mountaineering routes and backcountry approaches.
