Sandwich Harbour

Sandwich Harbour is a coastal lagoon and dune system on Namibia’s Atlantic coast, notable for where high mobile sand dunes meet the sea. It is one of the region’s distinctive dune-sea landscapes and is located on the Namibian shoreline south of Walvis Bay.

The site is valued for dramatic dune-swept beaches and a narrow lagoon running behind the dunes, offering close views of the point where desert meets ocean. Birdwatching is a major draw, with waders and flamingos often concentrated in the sheltered parts of the lagoon. Guided 4x4 excursions and boat trips from nearby towns give access to viewpoints where dunes sweep down to the water.

The area has been shaped by ongoing coastal and aeolian processes rather than by human construction; its current form reflects shifting dunes and tidal influence. There is a history of restricted access to protect sensitive habitats and cultural remains along the coast.

Sandwich Harbour lies on Namibia’s central Atlantic coast, roughly south of Walvis Bay and within the coastal strip of the Namib Desert. The nearest service towns for visitors are Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, which provide tours and transport to the site.
