Sandal Castle
Castle Ruins of medieval motte-and-bailey castle
On a ridge near Wakefield, Sandal Castle comprises medieval earthworks and stone ruins tied to the Wars of the Roses, with an on-site visitor centre.
Sandal Castle is a ruined medieval fortification on a sandstone promontory overlooking the River Calder in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The site originates in the Norman period and is historically significant for its role in later medieval warfare.
Visitors encounter visible earthworks, remnants of a stone gatehouse and the raised motte which together outline the former castle footprint and offer views across the Calder valley. Interpretation panels and paths allow exploration of the ruins and surrounding parkland.
Originally founded as a timber motte-and-bailey in the Norman era, the site was rebuilt and strengthened in stone in the later medieval centuries. It was the scene of the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 during the Wars of the Roses and subsequently fell into ruin.
The castle stands above the River Calder in Wakefield, within easy reach of the city centre and its transport links, on woodland and parkland that form part of the local greenbelt.
- Battle site: The castle and its surroundings were the location of the Battle of Wakefield on 30 December 1460, a key engagement in the Wars of the Roses; the motte gives a clear view over the battlefield area.
What to See #
- Gatehouse and earthworks: Surviving stonework and foundations of the medieval gatehouse mark the original entrance and show defensive features typical of Norman and later medieval castles.
- Motte and bailey: A raised motte and surrounding bailey earthworks indicate the castle's original motte-and-bailey layout and provide elevated viewpoints over the surrounding landscape.
- Visitor area: A small visitor area with interpretive panels explains the site's history, and waymarked paths link viewing points across the ruins and river valley.
How to Get to Sandal Castle #
From Wakefield Kirkgate or Westgate stations take local bus routes toward Sandal and Agbrigg (services vary) or a 15-20 minute taxi ride. The site is a short walk from local residential streets; signage directs to the car park and pathways.
