Sanda Island is a small island off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula in western Scotland, situated in the Firth of Clyde. It is known for its seabird colonies and for a prominent lighthouse on the island.
The island’s rocky shores and grass-covered interior attract seabirds and marine-wildlife observers, while the lighthouse is the principal built feature. There are no significant tourism facilities and visits are typically by private boat.
A 19th-century lighthouse on the island was established to aid navigation through surrounding channels and shoals. The structure and its surroundings are the main historic and visual points of interest.
Geographically the island lies off Kintyre in Argyll and Bute, south of the Mull of Kintyre and within the marine channels of the Firth of Clyde.
- Wildlife: Home to seabird colonies and frequent marine mammals sightings from the shoreline, making it of interest to wildlife observers.
- Access: Landing and visits are limited and usually require a private boat; there are no extensive visitor facilities on the island.

Tips for Visiting Sanda Island #
- Access Sanda Island only via private boat or wildlife-charter trips from the Kintyre/Campbeltown area - there is no regular public ferry, so prebook with local operators.
- Plan your visit in late spring and summer when seabird colonies are active and sea conditions are typically calmer; wildlife trips in these months give the best chance of seeing puffins, guillemots and seals.
- If you intend to land, check landing permissions and tides with the boat operator - parts of the island are privately managed and safe landing spots are limited.
Best Time to Visit Sanda Island #
The best time is late spring to early autumn (May-September) when sea conditions and daylight most often allow safe boat access and wildlife viewing.
