Sanctuary of Atotonilco

The Sanctuary of Atotonilco is an 18th-century Roman Catholic sanctuary in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, known for its extensive interior mural decoration. It is a major devotional site and pilgrimage destination in the region.

The sanctuary contains large-scale Baroque and Neoclassical painted programs that cover vaults, walls, chapels, and the sacristy, with scenes used for instruction and devotion. The scale of the murals and the extent of coverage are principal reasons visitors come.

Construction and decoration took place in the 18th century under local religious patrons and artisans who developed the complex as a pilgrimage and penitential center. The site evolved as devotional practices and processions grew in the region.
