San Salvador Island
Island Bahamas island known for beaches and historic sites
A low-lying Bahamian island with sandy beaches, coral reefs and dive sites; visited for snorkeling, sport fishing and small resorts, with boat trips to nearby cays common on itineraries.
San Salvador Island is an island in the eastern Bahamas often identified in historical and local tradition as the probable site of Christopher Columbus’s first landfall in the Americas in October 1492.
The shoreline offers a mix of sandy beaches, limestone outcrops and shallow coral reefs; visitors commonly come for beach time, snorkeling and shore-based diving at shallow reef sites. A local monument and interpreted landing area mark the traditional Columbus site.
Historically the island has been known by several names; in the 20th century the name San Salvador was adopted for the modern political designation while older charts often show the name Watling Island.
The island is one of the easternmost islands of the Bahamas and contains the main settlement Cockburn Town, which functions as the island’s transport and services hub.
- Columbus landfall: European accounts identify the island as a likely site of Christopher Columbus's first 1492 landfall; this reference underpins much of the island's visitor interpretation.
- Main settlement access: Cockburn Town serves as the gateway for visitors arriving by ferry or small aircraft.
What to See #
- Cockburn Town: Cockburn Town is the island's main settlement and administrative centre, located on the eastern shore.
- Columbus landing site: A marked landing area and monument commemorate the location traditionally identified as Christopher Columbus's first landfall on 12 October 1492.
- Beaches and dive sites: Shallows, coral reefs and fringing banks around the island provide common sites for snorkeling and recreational diving.
How to Get to San Salvador Island #
Fly from Nassau (the Bahamas) to San Salvador on scheduled domestic flights or charter services that serve the island; flights land at the island airport adjacent to Cockburn Town. From the airport take a taxi or rental car for the short transfer into Cockburn Town or to nearby beaches - ferries from Nassau exist but are infrequent, so air travel is the usual access route.
Tips for Visiting San Salvador Island #
- Plan arrivals and major outings for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the busiest tour-boat/snorkel departures; lighting at those times is also better for photos of the coastline and the Columbus memorial sites.
- Fly into San Salvador Airport (ZSA) or base yourself in Cockburn Town-the town is the island's service hub and the easiest place to book boat trips, guided shore excursions and local transport.
- Book any inter-island or charter boat trips in advance and ask operators for reef/snorkel stops-San Salvador is best explored by boat and organized operators know the best, less-visited reef sites.
Best Time to Visit San Salvador Island #
