San Pietro in Montorio

San Pietro in Montorio is a small church on Rome’s Janiculum hill, traditionally identified as the site of Saint Peter’s martyrdom and renowned for the small Renaissance shrine in its courtyard. The courtyard contains the famous circular Tempietto by Donato Bramante, an important work of the High Renaissance.

The main draw within the compound is the Tempietto, an architecturally influential martyrium executed around the start of the 16th century and admired for its classical proportions and Doric columns. The church and surrounding gardens also offer views across central Rome from the Janiculum ridge.

A medieval church occupied the site for centuries; the present complex was altered and expanded in the late medieval and Renaissance periods, with the Tempietto added in the early 1500s as a commemorative monument. The site has long association with Spanish patrons and later restorations preserved the courtyard shrine.

The church and Tempietto sit on the Janiculum (Gianicolo) to the west of Rome’s historic centre, a short distance uphill from Trastevere and within walking distance of central Rome viewpoints. Access is typically by foot from nearby neighbourhoods or by road transport up the hill.
