San Pedro de la Roca Castle, also known as Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca, is a Spanish colonial fortress guarding the approaches to Santiago de Cuba’s harbour. The fortress occupies a rocky promontory and comprises defensive bastions, batteries and internal structures laid out to protect the port.
Visitors see the ramparts, terraces and preserved defensive works that illustrate 17th-century military architecture adapted to a Caribbean harbour. The castle’s seawards position provides commanding views over the bay and was integral to coastal defence.
Construction began in the early 17th century and continued through subsequent decades as the fort was expanded and modified to meet evolving defensive needs. The complex has been conserved and restored to retain its historic defensive features.
The fortress stands on a headland at the entrance to Santiago de Cuba’s harbour on the island’s southeastern coast, immediately adjacent to the city and visible from much of the bay area.
