Off California’s coast, San Nicolas Island is a Navy-managed Channel Island with restricted access; researchers and permitted visitors study seabird colonies, archaeology and rugged shoreline.
San Nicolas Island is one of the Channel Islands of California located off the southern California coast. It is owned and managed by the United States Navy and is not open for routine public visitation.
The island has a long human history including precontact occupation by the Nicoleño people and later use by ranchers and the US military. It is known in cultural history for the story of the “Lone Woman of San Nicolas,” the last known Nicoleño inhabitant taken to the mainland in the 19th century.
During the 20th century the Navy established facilities on the island and it has been used for military testing and training as well as scientific research into island ecology. Because of military ownership, access is regulated and limited.
San Nicolas Island lies about 60 to 100 kilometres off the coast of Southern California, southwest of the city of Santa Barbara and west of the Los Angeles/Channel Islands coastline.
