San Miguel Island

San Miguel Island is one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California and is included in Channel Islands National Park and the surrounding National Marine Sanctuary. The island contains coastal cliffs, sea caves, and exposed island-steppe and scrub habitats that support seabird colonies and marine mammals.

Seabird and marine mammal viewing, tidepooling along rocky shores, and archaeological sites documenting long-term Native American occupation. Recreational opportunities are mostly wilderness-focused - kayaking, hiking, wildlife watching, and primitive camping - with no full-service visitor facilities on the island.

Archaeological evidence shows the island was used by Chumash and other coastal Indigenous peoples; later uses included ranching and maritime activity. The island’s remoteness and protected status have preserved significant natural and cultural resources.

San Miguel lies offshore from central-southern California and is administered as part of Santa Barbara County; access is by sea from mainland harbors such as Ventura or Port San Luis and crossings depend on weather and sea conditions.
