San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park preserves the site of the San Marcos de Apalache fortress at the mouth of the St. Marks River in Florida. The location includes archaeological remains, reconstructed elements and interpretive exhibits that explain its long use as a coastal fortification.
Visitors see ruins, masonry foundations, a small museum and interpretive signage that describe fortifications built and rebuilt by Spanish, British, American and Confederate forces. The site is visited for its historic remains, waterfront setting and educational displays rather than as a large, reconstructed fort complex.
The site served as a defensive and trading point through the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and changed hands among colonial and national powers; it was repeatedly altered to meet military needs during different periods.
The park sits at the confluence of the St. Marks River and the Gulf of Mexico near the town of St. Marks in Wakulla County, roughly south of Tallahassee along Florida’s Gulf Coast.
