San Juan de Ulúa

San Juan de Ulúa is a fortress complex on an island in the harbour of Veracruz, Mexico, originally constructed during the Spanish colonial period in the 16th century. It served as the principal defensive work for the port of Veracruz for several centuries.

Built by Spanish colonial authorities in the 16th century to defend one of New Spain’s most important Atlantic ports, the complex was expanded and reinforced over subsequent centuries. It has functioned as a fortress, naval base and prison at different times and has been involved in colonial-era conflicts and later Mexican military history.

The fort occupies a small island at the entrance to the port of Veracruz, directly offshore from the city of Veracruz; it is a short boat ride from the city waterfront and is one of the harbor’s most prominent landmarks.
