The San Joaquin Valley is the southern half of California’s Central Valley, a broad inland plain that is one of the state’s principal agricultural regions. It extends roughly from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in the north to the Tehachapi Mountains in the south.
The valley contains large agricultural landscapes, farm towns and several mid-sized cities such as Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield; it is also crossed by major transport corridors including State Route 99 and Interstate 5. Seasonal agricultural activity and roadside produce markets are common sights, and the region includes state parks and reservoirs used for recreation.
Historically an area of Native American habitation, the valley was settled and developed for large-scale agriculture during the 19th and 20th centuries with the growth of irrigation infrastructure. Over the 20th century it became central to California’s role as a major national food producer.
The San Joaquin Valley lies in central California, south of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and north of the Tehachapi Mountains, covering parts of several counties and centring on cities such as Fresno and Bakersfield.
