How to Get to San Jacinto Peak #

San Jacinto Peak is commonly reached from Palm Springs. One popular approach is to drive to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway base in Palm Springs, ride the tram to Mountain Station, and then continue on foot via marked mountain trails to the summit (this is a steep, multi‑hour hike). Alternately, you can drive to the Idyllwild/Humber Park area via CA‑74 (Pines‑to‑Palms Scenic Byway) and begin one of the main trailhead hikes from there.

Tips for Visiting San Jacinto Peak #

  • If you want to avoid most of the elevation gain and the worst heat, take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to the Mountain Station and start your summit approach from there - it shortens the climb significantly.
  • Start very early (pre‑sunrise if possible) in summer to beat the heat and get the most stable weather; in winter and shoulder seasons check for snow and icy trail conditions before setting out.
  • Choose weekdays or less popular routes to avoid weekend crowds at trailheads; the main trails from the tram and from Idyllwild get busiest on Saturdays and holidays.
