San Gorgonio Mountain
Mountain Southern California's highest peak in San Bernardino Mountains
The tallest summit in Southern California, San Gorgonio Mountain sits in the San Bernardino range; hikers and mountaineers tackle steep routes and use valley trailheads for ridgeline views.
San Gorgonio Mountain (often called Mount San Gorgonio) is the highest peak in Southern California, with a summit elevation of 11,503 ft (3,506 m). It is the dominant summit of the San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gorgonio Wilderness within the San Bernardino National Forest.
Hikers and mountaineers visit for long, steep alpine routes and panoramic summit views; trails gain substantial elevation and can take most of a day or require overnight camping. The mountain’s elevation produces subalpine and montane ecological zones and often snow in winter.
The peak is a product of regional tectonic uplift associated with the Transverse Ranges and has been managed for conservation as part of a designated wilderness area to protect its natural character. Recreation and backcountry use have shaped trail networks and campground locations over time.
San Gorgonio sits inland in Riverside County near the San Gorgonio Pass, roughly northeast of the Inland Empire and northwest of the Coachella Valley, rising sharply above nearby lowland communities.
- Summit elevation: Summit elevation is 11,503 ft (3,506 m), making it the highest peak in Southern California.
- Seasonal conditions: Snow can persist on higher slopes into spring and winter conditions make summit approaches icy; proper gear and planning are recommended outside summer months.
How to Get to San Gorgonio Mountain #
Mount San Gorgonio is accessed from the Inland Empire/Palm Springs region. From the Los Angeles area take I‑10 east toward the Banning/Beaumont area, then follow local roads (CA‑38 or forest roads depending on the trailhead) north into the San Bernardino National Forest to Forest Falls/Angelus Oaks or other trailhead parking areas. From Palm Springs the drive is shorter (roughly 30-45 miles depending on route); expect to park and hike several miles from trailhead lots to the summit.
Tips for Visiting San Gorgonio Mountain #
- Begin very early to avoid strong afternoon storms and heat; San Gorgonio's high elevation leads to rapid weather changes, so summit attempts are safest with a long morning start.
- For the shortest, steepest ascent use the Vivian Creek trailhead - it's the most commonly used route for day hikers and offers the quickest line to the summit, but parking is limited so arrive early.
- If you intend to overnight, secure a San Bernardino National Forest wilderness permit and check trail and road conditions with the forest service - overnight permits are required in the wilderness and conditions (snow, washouts) change seasonally.
Best Time to Visit San Gorgonio Mountain #
The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when trails are most likely to be snow-free and accessible for hiking.
