San Gennaro extra Moenia

San Gennaro extra Moenia is a church and early-Christian burial complex located in Naples, Campania, situated outside the ancient city walls - the name literally means ‘Saint Januarius outside the walls’. The site is notable for its early Christian catacombs and associated funerary architecture.

Substantial underground catacombs and fragments of early mosaic and funerary chapels that date to late antiquity. The above-ground basilica structures reflect multiple construction and restoration phases across the medieval and later periods.

The complex originated as a burial and commemorative site associated with the cult of Saint Januarius and developed into a basilica complex over time. Archaeological work has revealed the layout of subterranean chapels and burial chambers that demonstrate continuous use and modification from antiquity onward.

The site sits in the northern part of Naples near the historic Rione Sanità area, outside the line of the ancient Roman walls. It is within the urban fabric of Naples and accessible from the city center by local transport.
