Park Large zoo renowned for diverse species and conservation programs
In Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo features extensive animal habitats, guided buses and botanical collections; visitors come for diverse species displays, conservation programs, and family-friendly encounters.
The San Diego Zoo is a large zoological park in Balboa Park, San Diego, that opened in 1916 and is known for its extensive living collections and conservation programs. The site emphasizes naturalistic habitats and immersive exhibits across roughly 100 acres.
Major exhibits combine habitat reconstruction and species diversity, with notable areas devoted to African and Asian fauna, large mammal exhibits and complex indoor-outdoor houses for birds and reptiles. The park operates guided bus tours and an aerial tram that provide convenient overviews and access to distant exhibits.
The zoo has grown from an early 20th-century animal collection into a global conservation and research institution with modern exhibit design and breeding programs. Its living collections and exhibit planning have evolved to emphasize species conservation, habitat simulation and public education.
The zoo is located within Balboa Park, in central San Diego, a short drive or transit ride from downtown and adjacent to other park museums and gardens.
- Timing tip: Arrive early in the day for the best animal activity and to avoid the busiest visitor periods later in the morning and afternoon.
- Getting around: The zoo offers guided bus tours and an aerial tram which reduce walking distances and give good overviews of the park layout and major habitats.
What to See #
- Africa Rocks: A multi-ecosystem complex and exhibit area focusing on African wildlife, housing multiple species in adjacent habitats designed to show ecological connections.
- Elephant Odyssey: A large mixed-species exhibit and pathway that showcases elephants alongside reconstructed paleontological displays and regional fauna, providing both live-animal viewing and educational interpretation.
- Skyfari Aerial Tram: An aerial tram that spans portions of the park and provides quick transit between distant exhibits as well as elevated views across the zoo grounds and Balboa Park.

- Use the zoo's map or official app to time keeper experiences (feedings and keeper talks) and head to popular enclosures like the panda and koala areas early or late in the day when crowds thin.
- Most visitors stick to the main loop-explore the less-trafficked exhibits in the northern and eastern sections later in the day when crowds concentrate around the central areas.
