San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Park Spanish colonial mission complex and World Heritage site
Along the San Antonio River, this park preserves Spanish colonial missions such as Mission San José and Concepción; visitors tour restored chapels, walk mission grounds and learn about colonial and indigenous histories.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park protects a series of Spanish colonial mission complexes established along the San Antonio River in what is now Texas. The park preserves churches, living quarters, irrigation acequia systems, and associated historic landscapes.
Visitors can tour restored mission compounds, church interiors, and interpretive exhibits that explain the missions’ roles in colonial settlement, agriculture, and cultural exchange. The park also supports cultural programming and educational outreach tied to the missions’ history.
The missions date to the 18th century when Spanish Franciscan missionaries established complexes as part of Spain’s northern frontier. Over time the sites changed hands and uses; preservation efforts in the 20th century led to their protection and the creation of the national historical park.
The park runs along the south side of San Antonio, Texas, with mission sites located several miles from downtown San Antonio; Mission San Jose9 and Mission Concepcif3n are the most visited and are connected by park roads and trails.
- Sites preserved: The park preserves four 18th-century Spanish mission complexes along the San Antonio River and includes a visitor center with interpretive exhibits.
- UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, the missions are valued for their architecture and role in colonial-era settlement and irrigation systems.
