San Agustín Archaeological Park
Religious Site Pre-Columbian sculptures and tombs in Andean Colombia
An archaeological park in Huila with large stone sculptures, tombs and ceremonial mounds from pre-Columbian Andean cultures. Visitors follow trails among carved figures, visit museums, and see burial sites and carved stelae.
San Agustín Archaeological Park is a protected archaeological landscape in the Huila Department of Colombia that preserves extensive pre-Colombian ceremonial sites, funerary monuments and carved stone sculptures. The park contains large groups of megalithic sculptures and burial mounds set across terraces and river valleys.
Notable elements include numerous anthropomorphic and zoomorphic stone statues, funerary structures and carved rock sanctuaries such as the Fuente de Lavapatas. Archaeological research has documented a long sequence of occupation and monument construction, and the site is important for understanding Andean and inter-Andean cultures prior to European contact.
The monuments were created by local societies over many centuries and were studied and protected in the 20th century as archaeological awareness grew; the park now functions both as a research area and a public heritage site with trails and interpretation.
The park lies in the mountainous southwest of Huila Department, with access from the municipal centres in the Magdalena River valley; the landscape is rugged, with archaeological concentrations on terraces above river gorges.
- Sculptures and tombs: The park preserves one of the largest concentrations of pre-Colombian stone sculptures in the Americas, with hundreds of carved figures and numerous burial sites.
- Access and guiding: Some park trails require steep walks across uneven ground; local guides are available and recommended for context and safe access to remote monuments.
What to See #
- Alto de los Ídolos: Alto de los Ídolos - a major concentration of carved stone figures and monuments dating from the early centuries of the first millennium, set on terraced platforms.
- Fuente de Lavapatas: Fuente de Lavapatas - a carved rock sanctuary with water channels and reliefs interpreted as a ceremonial bathing and water-use site.
- Sculptural clusters: Alto de las Piedras and other sculptural clusters - additional sites within the park that contain upright statues, funerary mounds and carved stelae spread across the hilly landscape.
