Samuel's Fortress, Ohrid

Samuel’s Fortress (also written Samuil’s Fortress) is a hilltop medieval stronghold overlooking the town of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia. The surviving fortifications and towers reflect significant medieval reconstruction associated with the reign of Tsar Samuel in the late 10th and early 11th centuries.

Visitors encounter extensive stone ramparts, towers and paved internal courtyards, with visible archaeological layers and interpretive information at the site. The fortress is well known for providing expansive views over Ohrid and the lake and for its visible sequence of defensive architecture.

The site sits on a rocky ridge above Ohrid’s old town; the current walls overlay earlier fortifications from Byzantine and earlier periods. The fortress was used and rebuilt across medieval centuries and underwent conservation in the 20th century to stabilise walls and open the site to tourism.

Samuel’s Fortress is immediately above Ohrid’s historic centre and is accessible on foot from the old town. It dominates the skyline above the western shore of Lake Ohrid.
