Samosata
Archaeological Site Ancient Mesopotamian city and former Commagene capital
Samosata, an ancient city in Adıyaman Province, contains archaeological remains from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Historians and visitors study its ruins and the region’s layered past.
Samosata was an ancient city on the Euphrates River in what is now Adıyaman Province, southeastern Turkey, with origins in antiquity and a long history under Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine rule. It once functioned as a regional urban centre and river crossing on the Euphrates.
Archaeological work in the 20th century documented remains of the city and recovered inscriptions, architectural fragments and movable finds; much of the ancient site was subsequently inundated when the Atatürk Dam reservoir filled in the late 1980s. Salvage excavations recovered material that was moved to regional museums.
Throughout antiquity Samosata served as a defensive and administrative centre on the Euphrates, was involved in regional trade and river traffic, and underwent successive phases of occupation and rebuilding under different rulers. Flooding in the late 20th century transformed the site’s accessibility and archaeological management.
The ancient remains lie at the edge of the modern reservoir in Adıyaman Province; the present-day administrative town of Samsat is nearby on higher ground and the region is dominated by the Euphrates valley and dam infrastructure.
- Flooding: Substantially flooded by the reservoir formed after construction of the Atatürk Dam in the late 1980s, with major archaeological clearance undertaken beforehand.
What to See #
- Ancient site: The submerged archaeological site of ancient Samosata lies beneath the reservoir created by the Atatürk Dam on the Euphrates; many finds were excavated prior to flooding and relocated.
- Modern Samsat: Modern Samsat - the relocated town near the reservoir that succeeded the flooded settlement and serves as the present local administrative centre.
