Samarkand in Uzbekistan is a historic Silk Road city and regional capital in Central Asia that became a major cultural and architectural centre under the Timurids in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. It is known for its large Timurid monuments and glazed tile decoration.

The monumental Registan ensemble of three madrasahs anchors the city centre and is one of the most visited architectural groups in Central Asia. Nearby highlights include the Gur‑e‑Amir mausoleum of Timur, the long tiled necropolis of Shah‑i‑Zinda and the large Bibi‑Khyum mosque, all notable for large domes, iwans and polychrome tilework.

Samarkand was a pre‑Islamic trading city that was extensively rebuilt and embellished when Timur established it as his capital around 1370-1405; major monuments date from Timur’s reign and from later Timurid and Uzbek patronage. The city continued as an important Silk Road crossroads and royal capital through successive centuries.

Samarkand sits in the fertile Zeravshan valley of south‑central Uzbekistan, in the Samarkand Region. It lies inland, roughly a few hundred kilometres southwest of Tashkent and at the intersection of historic east‑west trade routes.

  • Timurid rebuilding: The city was remade as a capital and building programme centre by Timur (Tamerlane) in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, giving it its distinctive Timurid architecture.
  • Registan ensemble: The Registan square is the principal ceremonial plaza and is framed by three large madrasahs constructed across the 15th to 17th centuries.

  • Bibi‑Khyum Mosque: A major early 15th century mosque project ordered by the city's ruler, notable for its monumental scale and surviving decorative work.
