The Saltoro Mountains are a subrange of the Karakoram in the eastern Karakoram region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, forming a high mountainous ridge immediately west of the Siachen Glacier. The range contains several major high peaks, including Saltoro Kangri at 7,742 metres.

Peaks in the Saltoro range rise into the high alpine zone with glaciers and steep ridgelines; the landscape is glaciated and rugged, with significant vertical relief typical of the Karakoram. Climbs and access to the high peaks are logistically demanding and occur under Himalayan expedition conditions.

Since the early 1980s the Saltoro ridge and adjacent Siachen area have been the site of military occupation and intermittent conflict between India and Pakistan, which has strongly affected access, safety and logistics for visitors and expeditions. As a result, travel in the area is subject to military control and restrictions.

Geographically the range runs along the western flank of the Siachen Glacier in the eastern Karakoram, within the broader region of Gilgit-Baltistan as administered by Pakistan.

  • Access and security: Contains multiple seven-thousand-metre peaks and is adjacent to the Siachen Glacier - access is restricted and heavily regulated for security reasons.
  • Current conditions: The area has been a militarised zone since the 1980s, and mountaineering is limited by the security situation and administrative controls.

What to See #

  • Saltoro Kangri: Saltoro Kangri is the highest peak in the range and measures 7,742 metres above sea level, dominating the ridge system west of the Siachen Glacier.
