Saltoro Kangri
Mountain High Karakoram summit in disputed Saltoro Range
One of the highest peaks of the Saltoro range near the Siachen Glacier, Saltoro Kangri reaches over 7,700 metres; access is heavily restricted by military presence, so only select expeditions and officials visit.
Saltoro Kangri is a high mountain on the Saltoro Ridge of the Karakoram range in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is one of the highest peaks in the Saltoro Mountains with an elevation of about 7,742 metres.
The peak stands over the Siachen Glacier region and commands strategic positions along the Saltoro Ridge. Because the area is part of a contested and militarized border zone, climbing and tourist access are restricted.
The mountain is part of the complex Karakoram topography and is noted for steep ridges and glaciated approaches. Its location near the Line of Control has shaped its modern status and the limited practical opportunities for mountaineering expeditions.
Saltoro Kangri sits on the western side of the main Karakoram and is positioned along the ridge that separates the Siachen Glacier from adjoining valleys.
- Elevation and access restrictions: summits reach above 7,700 metres in elevation and stand on the Saltoro Ridge overlooking the Siachen Glacier; the area is heavily militarized and civilian access is severely restricted.
