The Salt Lake Temple is the largest and most prominent temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located on Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Construction began in 1853 and the building was dedicated in 1893 after roughly 40 years of construction.
Settlers of the Latter-day Saint movement began quarrying local granite in the 1850s and gradually erected the temple through decades of local labour and fundraising; it has since been the site of major religious ordinances and ceremonial use. The building has undergone maintenance and renovation projects periodically to preserve its structure and fabric.
The temple occupies the centre of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City, immediately north of the state capitol axis and surrounded by other church-owned buildings and visitor spaces.
