Salt Cay is a small inhabited island in the Turks Islands (part of the Turks and Caicos Islands), historically associated with sea salt production. It retains a small, low-rise settlement and terrestrial salt-pond landscapes.

The island is known for clear coastal waters, diving and snorkeling on nearby reefs, and seasonal whale watching during the winter-to-spring humpback migration. Historic saltworks and a compact colonial-era townscape are visible around the main settlement and shoreline.

Salt raking and salt export were the island’s traditional economic activities under British colonial administration; those operations declined in the 20th century and the island later developed modest tourism and fishing. The island remains sparsely developed compared with larger Turks and Caicos islands.

Salt Cay sits in the Turks Islands group of the Turks and Caicos archipelago in the Atlantic, southwest of Providenciales.

  • Whale season: Best whale-watching season is during the North Atlantic humpback migration, roughly winter to early spring when whales pass the Turks and Caicos.
  • Getting there: Access is by small inter-island flights or boat; services are limited so plan connections in advance.

Once on the island, everything is within a short taxi, bike, or golf-cart ride.

Tips for Visiting Salt Cay, Turks Islands #

  • Book the tiny inter-island flight early-seats sell out and there are no reliable backups.
  • Bring small bills and a printed reservation for accommodations: cell coverage can be patchy and some places don't accept cards.
  • Rent a golf cart or bicycle on arrival; the island is only about 3 km across and roads are narrow.
  • If visiting Jan-Mar, arrange a whale-watching trip in advance; humpback whale sightings are common.
  • Stay on Salt Cay after sunset to see the old salt-works silhouettes-there's a melancholy beauty to the cracked pans at dusk.
