Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine near Zipaquirá in Cundinamarca Department, Colombia. The site is a major religious and tourist attraction carved into halite deposits.

Inside the mine visitors walk through lit passageways to a central salt-carved nave and a series of chapels and stations of the cross, with sculpted religious motifs and engineered lighting. The complex also includes exhibits about salt mining and the geological formation of the deposits.

Salt has been extracted from the Zipaquirá halite deposits for centuries; a pilgrimage chapel was first constructed underground in the 20th century and later replaced by the current sanctuary and visitor complex completed toward the end of the 20th century.

The cathedral sits approximately 50 kilometers north of Bogotá near the town of Zipaquirá, within an underground salt mine set in the rolling terrain of the Cundinamarca highlands.
