Salamis Island
Island Greek island site of the ancient Battle of Salamis
Off Piraeus, Salamis Island draws history-minded day-trippers to Battle of Salamis sites, classical ruins and scattered rocky beaches; local tavernas serve simple seafood. Ferries make short crossings; expect archaeological walks, coastal views and quiet village life rather than resort infrastructure.
An island in the Saronic Gulf just off the coast of Attica, Salamis (Salamina) is best known for its ancient city and its role in classical history. The island contains archaeological remains from Greek and Roman periods and is historically important for the naval Battle of Salamis in 480 BC.
Remains at the archaeological site include elements of a theatre, parts of the agora and other public structures; these are the primary attractions for visitors interested in ancient Greek history. The modern town of Salamina occupies part of the island and provides basic services for visitors.
Ancient Salamis was a major polis in antiquity and the battle fought nearby was a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars under the strategic direction of Themistocles. Over subsequent centuries the island continued to be inhabited and shows layers of classical, Hellenistic and Roman occupation.
Salamis lies a short sea crossing from the port of Piraeus and the adjacent mainland at Perama, making it one of the closer islands to Athens and the Peloponnese shipping routes.
- Historical significance: The site of the 480 BC naval Battle of Salamis where Greek city-states defeated the Persian fleet, with visible archaeological remains of the ancient city including a theatre and agora.
- Access: Served by short ferry crossings from the Piraeus/Perama area, making it accessible from Athens for day visits.
How to Get to Salamis Island #
Salamis (Salamina) lies immediately off the coast near Piraeus. Local car and passenger ferries run from Perama (a short drive west of Piraeus) to several points on Salamis; ferry crossings are very short (minutes). Perama is about 15 km by road west of central Athens/Piraeus, reachable by car or local bus; once on Salamis the main towns and archaeological sites are reachable by local roads and short walks from the ferry landings.
Tips for Visiting Salamis Island #
- Take the short ferry from Perama or Piraeus early in the day to avoid peak-daytripper traffic from Athens; crossings are brief so an early start lets you explore the island before mid-day crowds.
- Head to the northwest coast for views across the Saronic Gulf toward the site traditionally associated with the Battle of Salamis-these coastal vantage points are quieter and often overlooked by visitors focused on the main towns.
- If you plan to visit historical markers or local museums, combine them with a single base in the main port town so you can use public ferries/buses efficiently-services on the island are intermittent, so timing your connections matters.
Best Time to Visit Salamis Island #
