Sakura Jima
Island Active volcanic island dominating Kagoshima Bay skyline
Sakurajima, an active volcano off Kagoshima Bay, offers coastal viewpoints, hiking trails, and nearby onsen; visitors watch eruptions from safe overlooks and explore volcanic landscapes by ferry.
Sakurajima is a highly active stratovolcanic complex in Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan, adjacent to the city of Kagoshima. It was formerly an island but lava flows in 1914 connected it to the Osumi Peninsula, and it remains one of the most frequently erupting volcanoes in Japan.
The volcano comprises several cones, with the southern cone typically the most active and producing repeated ash emissions and occasional explosive events. The island’s frequent eruptions mean ash fall is common in nearby populated areas, and continuous geological monitoring is in place.
Sakurajima’s highest elevations exceed 1,000 metres and its slopes show lava fields, ash deposits and vegetation zones altered by volcanic activity. Regular ferry services from Kagoshima provide access for short visits and viewpoints across the bay.
The island sits in Kagoshima Bay directly opposite Kagoshima City on Kyushu’s southern coast and is visible across the bay from the city waterfront.
- Volcanic activity and impact: Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes and frequently produces ash fall that affects nearby Kagoshima City; local monitoring and evacuation plans are maintained.
- Access: Ferries connect the island with Kagoshima across Kagoshima Bay, providing a short passenger link that is often used by visitors.
What to See #
- Minami-dake (southern cone): The southern volcanic cone and frequent eruption site that produces ash plumes and lava flows observed repeatedly during the 20th and 21st centuries.
- Kita- and Naka-dake cones: Two other principal cones and surrounding lava fields that form the island's volcanic complex and dramatic coastline.
