Sakar (mountain)

Sakar is a low mountain range in southeastern Bulgaria, primarily within Haskovo Province, characterized by rolling hills, oak and mixed woodlands, and agricultural valleys. The area is modest in elevation and is better described as a hilly massif rather than high mountains.

Local economies emphasize vineyards, orchards, and livestock rather than high-elevation tourism; the landscape supports biodiversity and scattered rural settlements. The terrain and climate make the range notable for regional wine production and for traditional rural land use.

Over time the Sakar area has been shaped by agriculture and forestry rather than major urban development; protected patches and natural habitats remain important for local wildlife. The region retains a largely rural character with small towns and farming communities.

Sakar sits in southeastern Bulgaria near the border with Turkey, within Haskovo Province and close to towns such as Topolovgrad and Svilengrad, forming part of the transition zone between the interior plains and the border highlands.
