Saint Stepanos Monastery is an Armenian monastic complex in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province near the Aras River, known for its medieval origins and enduring Armenian heritage. The site is one of the best-preserved Armenian monasteries in the region and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.
The complex contains a main church and ancillary buildings set on a sloping site; visitors typically view stone masonry, carved crosses and traditional Armenian church architecture. The monastery sits on a prominent site close to the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan, making it a notable cultural landmark in the Jolfa area.
The monastery has medieval origins and was used as an Armenian Christian religious centre; it was rebuilt and expanded repeatedly over the centuries. It continued functioning as a monastic community and a pilgrimage site and has been conserved in modern times as part of Iran’s protection of historical monuments.
The complex stands near the town of Jolfa in northwestern Iran, close to the Aras River and the international frontier with the Caucasus. The surrounding landscape is a mix of river valley and semi-arid hills.

- For the classic view and photography, walk to the opposite bank of the Aras River (there is a vantage point across the river) to capture the full monastery silhouette against the gorge - many visitors only see it up close and miss this panorama.
