Saint Nicholas’ Church in Ghent is a medieval parish church located on the Korenmarkt in the historic centre of Ghent, Belgium. It is one of the city’s three landmark medieval towers and is an important example of Scheldt Gothic architecture.
The interior is characterised by a hall-like Gothic nave with slender columns and ribbed vaulting, and the exterior is built largely of blue-gray Tournai limestone. The church occupies a central position in the medieval street pattern and is closely grouped with the Belfry and St. Bavo’s Cathedral, forming the classic view of Ghent’s skyline.
Construction of the current Gothic church dates mainly to the 13th and 14th centuries and it was dedicated to St Nicholas, long venerated as the patron saint of merchants and the local trade community. The building has seen repairs and restoration work over the centuries to maintain its medieval fabric.
The church stands in central Ghent on the Korenmarkt, immediately adjacent to the Belfry and a short walk from the Graslei quay along the river Lys.
- Best viewpoint: The church forms one of Ghent's three famous medieval towers and sits on the Korenmarkt beside the Belfry and St. Bavo's Cathedral, making the Korenmarkt a good viewpoint for the historic skyline.
