Saint Michael's Castle
Palace 18th-century imperial palace with distinctive Baroque architecture
A compact early 19th-century palace in St. Petersburg, Mikhailovsky (Saint Michael’s) Castle combines neoclassical and romantic details; visitors study its military history, architecture and rotating exhibitions from the Russian Museum.
Saint Michael’s Castle (Mikhailovsky Castle) is an ornate late-18th-century imperial residence in central Saint Petersburg, Russia, built for Emperor Paul I and completed in 1801. The building is notable for its fortress-like appearance and its location on a small island bounded by the Moika and Fontanka rivers.
Architect Vincenzo Brenna worked on the design and the palace combined neoclassical and romantic military motifs. The castle is historically significant as the place where Paul I was assassinated in 1801, shortly after taking up residence, and it saw little continuous use as a royal residence thereafter.
In the 20th century the complex became part of museum holdings and today functions as a branch of the State Russian Museum with exhibition spaces and restored historic interiors. The site is a short walk from other central St Petersburg landmarks such as the Field of Mars and the Summer Garden.
Located in the city centre, the castle occupies a small island site at the junction of the city’s canal network and is readily accessible from the central tourist routes.
- Construction and assassination: Constructed between 1797 and 1801 for Emperor Paul I, the castle was the site of his assassination in March 1801 less than two years after he moved in.
