Saint Croix
Island Largest US Virgin Islands island with diverse beaches
Saint Croix offers scuba diving, snorkel sites like Buck Island, colonial towns Christiansted and Frederiksted, rum distilleries and beachside resorts, with a mix of plantation and maritime history.
Saint Croix is the largest of the main islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean and is one of the territory’s primary population and cultural centers. It is notable for its colonial towns, agricultural history, and offshore marine reserves.
The island offers a mix of beaches, historic towns and reefs. Key spots include the colonial waterfront of Christiansted, the historic port town of Frederiksted, and offshore marine areas with coral reefs that support snorkeling and diving. There are several beaches, small settlements, and plantation-era ruins scattered around the coast.
Denmark colonized the island and it formed part of the Danish West Indies; the islands were transferred to United States sovereignty in 1917. The economy historically centered on sugar plantations; over time the island’s economy diversified into tourism, services and some light industry.
Geographically it sits in the Caribbean Sea as part of the U.S. Virgin Islands archipelago, separated from the other main islands by a few dozen kilometres of sea. The landscape combines low coastal plains, small hills and developed town centers along the sheltered bays.
- Snorkel season: Best time for calm seas and snorkeling is late winter to spring, when water visibility tends to be highest.
- Getting around: Car rental is the most practical way to move between towns and beaches; public transport is limited.
What to See #
- Christiansted: Located on the northern shore, the historic town founded by the Danes features 18th- and 19th-century colonial architecture, timber warehouses, and a small harbor that serves ferries and local boats.
- Frederiksted: On the western coast, this settlement grew around a deepwater harbor and sugar plantation estates; it is the site of several historic forts and the island's ferry terminal.
- Buck Island / reef reserve: A protected offshore reserve known for coral reefs and clear snorkeling waters located a short boat ride from the main island; the reef and surrounding marine habitats are managed for conservation and recreation.
How to Get to Saint Croix #
Saint Croix’s main air gateway is Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX). From the airport taxis and rental cars provide the usual connections to the island’s main towns (Christiansted and Frederiksted); drives to the principal towns are typically on the order of tens of minutes depending on which town you head to. Ferries from nearby U.S. Virgin Islands and inter‑island boat services also call at Saint Croix’s ports (Christiansted or Frederiksted) - use local schedules for exact sailings.
Tips for Visiting Saint Croix #
- Base yourself in Christiansted or Frederiksted and rent a car to explore the island-the main sights and beaches are spread out and public transport is limited.
- Book morning boat trips to Buck Island Reef National Monument from Christiansted well in advance; early departures give the best snorkelling conditions and fewer visitors on the reef.
- Check for seasonal closures or access restrictions at protected beaches (for example turtle‑nesting sites) before planning specific beach visits.
