Saihō-ji (Kyoto)

Saihō‑ji, commonly known as Koke‑dera or the Moss Temple, is a Rinzai Zen temple in western Kyoto famous for its extensive moss garden and classical Japanese garden design. The site is prized for its dense moss carpets and historic garden layout.

The temple’s moss garden covers the central precinct with winding paths, ponds and stone settings that showcase a wide variety of moss species across shaded ground; visitors typically follow a prescribed circuit through the garden and temple buildings. Access is controlled and visitor numbers are limited to preserve the moss and the temple environment.

Saihō‑ji has origins in the medieval period and was redeveloped by the garden designer Muso Soseki in the Kamakura/Muromachi era; the site’s present fame rests largely on its moss garden, which developed over many centuries. The temple remains an active religious site with conservation measures for its gardens.

The temple sits in western Kyoto, a short distance from Arashiyama and central Kyoto, and is reached by local bus or taxi from major train stations.
