How to Get to Sahiwal
Sahiwal is easiest reached overland: the city sits on Pakistan Railways' main line and is also served by intercity buses. There is a small Sahiwal airbase with no scheduled commercial flights; most air travellers come via Lahore (Allama Iqbal International) or Multan and continue to Sahiwal by train, coach or car.
Sahiwal Airbase: Sahiwal has a small airfield (Sahiwal Airbase) used mainly for military and occasional charter flights; there are no regular commercial passenger services. If you arrive by private flight or charter here you reach the city centre by taxi or auto-rickshaw - expect roughly 10-20 minutes and about PKR 150-400 depending on vehicle and time of day.
Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE): Lahore’s main airport is the most common entry point for Sahiwal visitors. From the airport you can transfer into Lahore city and then take a direct Pakistan Railways train from Lahore Junction to Sahiwal Railway Station (see Train card) or an intercity coach; expect total travel times of about 2.5-4 hours to Sahiwal. Typical onward costs from Lahore to Sahiwal are roughly PKR 150-800 depending on train class or coach operator; a private car/taxi from Lahore airport to Sahiwal will be faster but substantially more expensive (several thousand PKR).
Train: Sahiwal is served by Sahiwal Railway Station on the main Karachi-Peshawar line. Regular services run between Lahore Junction and Sahiwal and between Multan Cantonment and Sahiwal; journey times are generally about 2.5-3.5 hours from Lahore and about 1.5-2.5 hours from Multan. Fares vary by class - economy/second-class tickets are commonly in the low hundreds of PKR (roughly PKR 100-400) while AC/first-class options cost more. Advance bookings can be made through Pakistan Railways or at station booking offices.
Bus: Intercity coaches and private buses connect Sahiwal with Lahore, Multan and other Punjab cities. Operators range from larger coaches to local private companies; Daewoo Express and other private carriers operate on major corridors (note: not every coach stops inside Sahiwal). Expect bus travel times roughly similar to trains (about 2.5-4 hours from Lahore) with fares typically in the PKR 300-800 range depending on operator and comfort level. Buses arrive at local terminals or roadside stops near the city - check the operator’s timetable for exact stops.
How to Get Around Sahiwal
Sahiwal is easiest to navigate by a mix of trains for intercity travel and autos/taxis for local trips. Trains and scheduled coaches give reliable links to Lahore and Multan; within the city, autos and local buses handle most short journeys. Walking works well in the central neighbourhoods for short distances.
- Train (Pakistan Railways) (PKR 100-800) - Sahiwal Railway Station is on the Karachi-Peshawar main line and is the most reliable way to reach and move between nearby cities. Trains from Lahore Junction and Multan Cantonment are frequent enough for day trips; book tickets at stations or via Pakistan Railways. Trains are usually the fastest budget option and are comfortable in AC classes, but expect occasional delays and bring a printed or digital ticket.
- Intercity coach / private bus (PKR 300-800) - Private coaches and intercity buses run between major Punjab cities and stop at or near Sahiwal. Larger operators offer reserved seats and air-conditioned coaches; smaller companies run more frequent but less-regulated services. Buses are a good value alternative to trains if you need a specific departure time, but check the exact drop-off point as some services use highway stops outside the city.
- Local buses & minibuses (PKR 20-60) - Within and around Sahiwal local buses and minibuses provide very cheap transport on fixed routes. They're informal and can be slow and crowded; useful for short hops if you're comfortable with local travel norms. Routes and schedules are not always published, so ask at your hotel or a local shop for guidance.
- Auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) (PKR 50-300) - Autos are the workhorse for short trips inside Sahiwal - plentiful, cheap and good for navigating narrow streets. Negotiate a fare before you get in or insist on the meter where available; typical short journeys cost a few hundred PKR. They're ideal for short last-mile hops where buses don't run.
- Taxis / ride-hailing (Careem, local taxis) (PKR 150-6,000+) - Ride-hailing apps (Careem has operated in Pakistan; availability varies) and local taxis provide a more comfortable point-to-point option than autos. Fares are higher than autos but convenient for airport transfers or when carrying luggage. For intercity private hires, agree a fixed price in advance - expect several thousand PKR for a private car to nearby cities.
- Walking - Sahiwal's city centre is compact enough to explore on foot for short distances, especially markets and neighbourhoods around the railway station. Pavements can be uneven and shade is limited in summer, so plan walks for cooler parts of the day and carry water.

Nightlife in Sahiwal #
Sahiwal’s evening scene is understated: family restaurants, tea shops and roadside eateries are the main options after dark rather than bars or clubs, due to local norms and licensing. Nighttime activity often centers on food and socialising; many places wind down by late evening. Dress conservatively, and use local advice for safe travel routes after dark.
