Saguaro National Park protects the iconic saguaro cactus and associated Sonoran Desert landscapes in southern Arizona. The park is managed in two districts that lie on opposite sides of Tucson.

Both districts offer scenic driving routes, trailheads for hiking and opportunities to view dense stands of mature saguaro cacti, which give the park its defining character. Trail systems range from short interpretive walks to longer backcountry routes where visitors can experience desert plants and wildlife.

The area was set aside to protect representative Sonoran Desert habitat and large concentrations of saguaro cacti, preserving landscapes that were increasingly threatened by development and land-use change. The two-district arrangement reflects the park’s geographic separation across Tucson.

The park’s two districts lie east and west of the city of Tucson, Arizona, protecting desert ranges and valley basins around the metropolitan area.

  • Two-district structure: The park is managed as two separate districts flanking the city of Tucson, each offering scenic drives, hiking trails and saguaro-dominated landscapes.

How to Get to Saguaro National Park #

Saguaro National Park consists of two districts that border Tucson, Arizona. The Tucson Mountain (West) District and the Rincon (East) District are both reachable by car from central Tucson in roughly 15-30 minutes depending on which district you visit; use local arterials (e.g., Gates Pass/Broadway/Speedway to the west, Tanque Verde/Kolb Road to the east) and follow park signage to visitor centers where parking is available. Public transit does not serve many trailheads, so driving is the usual way to access the park and its trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Saguaro National Park #
