Saffron Walden Castle
Castle Earthwork remains of Norman motte-and-bailey castle
The medieval motte-and-bailey remains in Saffron Walden mark a Norman castle site; visitors stroll the mound and explore the town’s market streets.
Saffron Walden Castle was a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress established in the medieval period in the market town of Saffron Walden in Essex. Very little of the original stonework survives; the most obvious remnant is the earthen motte and associated earthworks.
Today the motte and the outline of the former castle are preserved within a public garden in the town center, and the site marks the historical footprint of the medieval castle rather than housing significant ruinous buildings. The castle played a role in regional administration and defense in the Middle Ages before falling into disuse and partial demolition in later centuries.
The castle mound and surrounding earthworks are centrally located within Saffron Walden and are a short walk from the town’s historic streets and market square.
- Origins: Originates as a Norman motte-and-bailey castle dating to the medieval period, with the motte and earthworks the visible remains today.
- Visiting note: The castle site is in the town center and is accessible to the public as a garden and historic mound rather than a standing keep or fortress.
