Sadoga Shima (commonly known as Sado Island) is a large island in Niigata Prefecture in the Sea of Japan, off the northwest coast of Honshu. It is the main island of the prefecture and has a distinct cultural and historical identity.
The island’s history includes use as a place of exile in earlier Japanese periods and extensive mining activity, notably the Sado gold mine which was important in the Edo period. Today Sado is known for its rural landscapes, coastal scenery and cultural events, including traditional drumming and performing arts.

How to Get to Sadoga Shima #
Sadoga Shima (Sado Island) is reached by ferry from the Niigata mainland. Take the Sado Kisen ferry from Niigata Port (bandai/Minato area) to Ryōtsu Port on Sado Island - both car ferries and high-speed passenger services operate on this route. From Ryōtsu Port you can continue around the island by local buses or taxi; the port area is a short walk to bus stops and visitor services.

- Take the early morning ferry from Niigata or Naoetsu to Ryōtsu to maximise your day on Sado; during summer and holiday weekends reserve vehicle spaces in advance as ferries fill up.
- Use Ryōtsu as your primary arrival point for easiest access to central island sights; if you plan to explore the south coast or Kodo-related sites, check schedules for arrivals at Ogi as an alternative.
