Sacra di San Michele
Monument Hilltop abbey and symbol of Piedmont's heritage
Perched on Mount Pirchiriano near Turin, Sacra di San Michele is a Romanesque abbey with stone stairways and views over the Susa Valley. Pilgrims and hikers come for the architecture, cliffside walks and mountain panoramas.
The Sacra di San Michele is a medieval abbey complex built on a rocky ridge above the Susa Valley in Piedmont, Italy and is a regional architectural symbol. Its origins date to the early Middle Ages and the complex occupies a prominent hilltop position.
The site contains successive medieval construction phases organized along a ridge, with a main abbey church, subsidiary chapels and fortified masonry that step down the slope. Visitors move along a defined path and stair sequence that conveys the vertical organization of the complex and offers interior and exterior views.
Several viewpoints around the abbey provide broad views over the Val di Susa and the surrounding Alpine landscape, and the site is often integrated into regional hiking and cultural itineraries.
Founded in the early medieval period as a mountaintop monastery dedicated to Saint Michael, the complex was built and modified over several centuries and served religious, defensive and symbolic roles in the region. It has been restored at multiple points in its history and remains a cultural landmark in Piedmont.
Sited on Mount Pirchiriano above the Susa Valley, the abbey is in northwest Italy’s Piedmont region and is commonly visited on day trips from Turin, which lies roughly 40 km to the east.
- Access note: Access involves a mountain approach along a road and a short uphill walk from the nearest parking; weather can change quickly at elevation so dress accordingly.
