Sabalan (Mount Sabalan) is a large dormant stratovolcano in northwest Iran’s Ardabil province, notable for its summit crater lake and permanent snowfields. It is one of Iran’s higher peaks.
The mountain’s summit area includes a shallow crater lake that is often partially frozen and attracts trekkers and mountaineers who approach from established routes. The mountain’s slopes feature seasonal alpine meadows and pastoral land used by local communities.
Sabalan is a volcanic edifice formed through successive eruptions in the geological past; local settlements have long used the mountain’s lower slopes for grazing. In modern times the mountain has been a focus for recreational climbing and hiking.
Sabalan rises in Ardabil province in northwest Iran, dominating the local landscape and overlooking the surrounding plains and towns in the province.

How to Get to Sabalan #
From Ardabil city, Sabalan is accessed by road toward the Sarein spa region; from Sarein motors transport or local 4x4s take climbers to higher trailheads. Ardabil has bus connections to Tehran and other Iranian cities; driving from Ardabil to the mountain area takes about 1-2 hours depending on start point.
Tips for Visiting Sabalan #
- If attempting a summit, acclimatize in Ardabil city and hire an experienced local guide; winter climbs require ice-axe and crampons.
- Hot springs in the foothills (Sarein area) make a good recovery stop after a long day of hiking.
- Check permit and local weather advisories; winter storms can close routes for days.
