Saariselkä is a small resort area in Finnish Lapland known for year-round outdoor activities including downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and aurora watching. The settlement functions as a tourism hub with ski lifts, marked trails and visitor services serving the surrounding fells.
The resort complex comprises accommodation, ski slopes and extensive cross-country track networks that are used in both winter and summer seasons. The area is popular for winter sports, scenic fell hiking in summer and as a base for Northern Lights tourism.

Saariselkä sits in northern Finnish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle, within the municipality of Inari and close to the small town of Ivalo; the area is surrounded by fell landscapes and is adjacent to protected areas and wilderness suited to outdoor recreation.

How to Get to Saariselkä #
Saariselkä is most easily reached via Ivalo Airport (IVL). From Ivalo there are scheduled airport shuttles, local buses and taxis; the drive to Saariselkä takes about 30-45 minutes (roughly 30 km) on regional roads. During the winter season many hotels and resorts operate direct shuttle services from Ivalo and from larger Lapland hubs.
Longer-distance bus connections also run to Saariselkä from Rovaniemi and other northern Finnish towns; if driving your route will be along the main north-south roads through Finnish Lapland with on-site signage to the resort.
Tips for Visiting Saariselkä #
- For the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights and long dark nights, visit between September and March and head out of the village to high, treeless spots after midnight when skies are clearest.
- Start walks or lifts up Kaunispää fell around sunset for wide panoramic views and easy access to established viewing trails - the Kaunispää area is the closest, most reliable viewpoint from Saariselkä.
- Book guided activities (aurora tours, husky or snowmobile trips) well in advance for peak winter weeks; weekday visits outside school holidays are noticeably less crowded.
- Use the village centre as your base and then push into Urho Kekkonen National Park for quieter trails-many visitors stick to the main pistes and miss the peaceful backcountry routes.
