Ryōan-ji
Temple Zen temple famed for minimalist rock garden
Ryōan-ji draws attention for its rectangular karesansui rock garden of fifteen stones set among raked gravel; visitors sit quietly at the viewing platform, explore temple grounds and nearby bamboo groves.
Ryōan-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in northwest Kyoto best known for its kare-sansui dry rock garden comprising 15 stones set in raked gravel. The temple compound includes a main hall, the rock garden and a large pond set within landscaped grounds.
The compact rock garden is viewed from the veranda of the abbot’s quarters and is designed for contemplative observation rather than close inspection. The temple grounds also contain wooden buildings and traditional garden plantings that predate and surround the rock garden.
The site originated from an aristocratic villa and was converted into a Zen temple in the 15th century; the rock garden itself is associated with late-medieval Zen design and has been maintained and conserved over subsequent centuries. Ryōan-ji is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for historic Kyoto monuments.
The temple sits in the northwest part of Kyoto city, a short distance from other cultural sites such as Kinkaku-ji, and is accessible by local bus and taxi services from central Kyoto.
