Main image

Rydal Water is a small lake in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England, noted for its literary connections and scenic setting. The lake is roughly 1 kilometre long and sits beside the village of Rydal.

A short, level lakeside walk provides views across the water to the surrounding fells; there are paths on both shores and a number of short circuits popular with walkers. The historic house Rydal Mount, associated with William Wordsworth, lies close to the northern shore and is a focal point for many visitors.

The lake occupies a glacially carved hollow typical of the Lake District and has been part of local estate landscapes for centuries. Rydal Mount was occupied by Wordsworth from 1813 to 1850 and the area has long attracted writers and walkers because of those associations.

Rydal Water lies between the towns of Ambleside and Grasmere in Cumbria, within the protected area of the Lake District National Park. The nearest larger settlement is Ambleside, and the site is reached by minor roads and public footpaths from local villages.

  • Access: The lakeside path on the eastern shore forms an easy, low-level circuit linking to public footpaths toward Ambleside and Grasmere.
  • Best viewpoints: The best views are from the gardens at Rydal Mount and from the eastern shore path where the lake sits against the surrounding fells.

What to See #

  • Rydal Mount: A late 18th/19th-century house and garden on the northern shore that was the home of William Wordsworth from 1813 until his death in 1850; the gardens offer formal beds and elevated views over the lake.
  • Rydal Cave: A small man-made rock shelter and quarrying feature on the western shore reached by a short path from the lakeside trail; locally popular for short visits and photography.
